Since check-out counters scanners are set-up to read EAN-13 bar codes, you must use this symbology and the corresponding numbering on trade units which may be retailed since trade units must always have unique identification, the EAN-13 number used should be different from the retail unit contained within.  If EAN-13 symbols are used on trade units, it should be as large as possible: upto 200% magnification.
