Retail units are items intended for
sale to the consumer at retail outlets. Each different
item must have its own unique number.

 Two types of numbering systems or symbologies are used for retail items, EAN-13 and for very small items, EAN-8.
EAN-13 is the most common and is used extensively on retail items.
