Logistic Unit

A logistic unit is usually packages of goods (retail or trade units) assembled for transport or storage, where the unit needs to be tracked and traced individually in the Supply Chain.

Logistic units may consist of single item, cartons, pallets or containers. Each package type may contain a standard set of contents or some unique combination for a particular customer's requirement.

Each logistic unit has an individual number. This implies,

  • all users who assign GS1 numbers to be logistic units must use their own GS1 prefix containing their company identification,
  • they must assign a unique number to each logistic unit.
