Standard
messages: Computer communications and applications used between trading partners
need a common language in order to understand each other, this common language is to be
found in EDI messages standards and most notably in UN/EDIFACT (United Nations Electronic
Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport), the International EDI
message standards and in UN/EDIFACT implementation guides such as EANCOM.
EDI Enabling software:
The basic functionality of EDI enabling software (EDI converter), is that of translation
of incoming messages from a message standard such as EDIFACT / EANCOM to a company's
internal in-house file format and vice-versa for out going messages.
Additionally, these software also
contain functionalities like maintenance of trading partners profile, communication module
to interface directly or via the third party value added networks, audit trails, security
or access control by way of password.
Communications
and Network: To transfer the data to the recipient, it is important to have a
telecommunication link for effective implementation of EDI concept.
In India, one can utilise leased
lines, Public telephone network, packet switched network or third party value added
networks. Private service providers offer sharing of band-width at usage based charges.
This can be effectively used at nominal charges
