Significant milestones in GS1 History:

 

History -  1988-1992

 

1988                    
  • Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand and Turkey join the EAN movement.
  • WPCOM (Working Party Communication) formed, the future CSC EDIFACT (created within UN/ECE) adopted as the EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) standard for national (where Numbering Organisations did not already have a national standard) and international communications. EAN becomes a subscriber of UN/ECE/WP-4 as a non-governmental body.
  • EAN and UCC endorse EAN.UCC-128 for coding supplementary information on dispatch units.
  
1989                  
  • Chile, Colombia, Hong Kong, Peru, Cuba, Poland and Uruguay join the EAN movement.
  • 1st version of UCC/EAN application identifiers published.
  • GS1 Guide on general merchandise and apparel published (based on UCC).
  • 1st version of EANCOM manual containing 7 trade message released.
  
1990                  
  • EAN Global Office becomes a liaison subscriber of CEN (Comite Europeen de Normalisation) technical committee on bar coding, CEN/TC 225.
  • Agreement with UCC on technical co-operation for the global compatibility of UCC and GS1 standards.
 
1991                
  • Bulgaria, China and Central America (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama) join GS1 movement.
  • Mission statement adopted.
 
1992                   
  • Croatia, Ecuador, Ireland, Malta, Slovenia, Tunisia join EAN movement.
  • Name changed to EAN Global Office.
  • 2nd version of EANCOM manual, containing 13 messages published.
  • International EAN guidelines approved on the coding of product variants.
  • Label standard for using EAN Application Identifiers released.
