- EAN bar

- 3rd version of EANCOM manual, containing 18

- Bosnia Herzegovina, Dominican Republic, India,
Mauritius, Moldova, Sri Lanka and Vietnam join the EAN movement.
- EDI secretariat for ECR (Efficient Customer
Response) Europe assumed by EAN .
- GPC (Global
Policy Committee) formed a joint EAN Committee
to advise the EAN and UCC Boards on global strategy
and co-operation.
- EAN/UCC - 128
replaces ITF 16 and ITF 6 for coding Variable Weight
Logistic Units. International rules on identification
of companies and their location defined. GS1 location
number using 13 digits approved.
- Update to EANCOM 1994 published, total of 27
messages.
- Healthcare
Collaboration Project formed involving 10 associations
and over 20 hospitals. EUCOMED (European Confederation
of Medical Devices Association) recommends its users
to migrate to EAN/UCC 128.

- Armenia, Egypt, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan and
Lebanon join the GS1 movement.
- EDI guide for Transport and Logistics
published. Consumer Specific Article (CSA) coding rules defined.
- 3 joint GS1
projects formed: Tec-Core (technical description of
GS1 system), App-Core (business model), and Trans-Core
(transport model).
- GS1 becomes a liaison subscriber of ISO/TC
122/WG4-Bar-Coded Shipping Labels.
- EAN Alliance
II Program signed to regulate the global administration
of UPC.GS1 number allocations.
- EAN becomes
a liaison subscriber of ISO/IEC/JTC 1/SC31 automatic data
capture.
- EDI manual based on EANCOM/EDIFACT (GEDI)
published by UCC.
- ECR working group formed. Electronic Catalogue
working group formed.
