Worldwide, the
Automobile industry extensively uses barcoding for automatic data capture of information
of its material & supplies during receipt, storage, work-in progress, dispatch and
sales operations.
In retail sales of auto parts,
spares & accessories, this is used to facilitate stock control, track &trace,
consumption forecasting etc. These operations are integrated with ERP/ EDI applications.
Recognising
the fact that EDI based document interchange in the Automobile
Industry is the norm world-wide for more efficient logistics
between OEMs and component manufacturers, in 1997, AIAM
(Automobile Manufacturers) and ACMA (Component Manufacturers)
decided to jointly approach the Ministry of Commerce for assistance
in making EDI a reality in the Auto Industry. In April 1997,
it nominated a group of users from the Industry to form a
team which was given exposure to EDI under the auspices of
UN-ESCAP at Bangkok.
This
was followed in July 1997 by the Ministry of Commerce forming
appropriate committees drawn from the Industry to discuss
all aspects of the problem and recommend the best course of
action. It was also decided to conduct a pilot trial on a
National scale so that experience over a wider sample could
be incorporated.

Phase-I of the report was
submitted in December' 98 and addressed the following issues:
- Uniform Messaging Standards based on EANCOM, a
subset of EDIFACT.
- Connectivity among value added networks and their
capabilities.
- Legal cover of EDI.
- Development of GS1 numbering and Barcoding.
GS1 Location Numbers :
These numbers are used for universal, unambiguous and unique
identification of interacting trading partners in EDI document
exchange. These numbers need to be used by all senders and
recipients of EDI messages in addressing of messages
and serve as a key to detailed contact particulars of each
party .This in turn facilitates easier identification and
mapping/ translation through use of standardised and universal
13 digit numeric GS1 numbers instead of using unstructured
free flow information for providing contact particulars.
Example
of GS1 Location No. in EDI document exchange for conveying
Information on contact particulars :
NAD+BY+8900000018017::9++
Buyer identified by "GS1 location number 8900000018017" as Hindustan
Motors, 6B GST Road, St. Thomas Mount Road, Chennai.
NAD+SU+8900000006015::9'
(Supplier)
Supplier is identified by "GS1 location number
890000006015" as UCAL Fuel system. E-9 Industrial
Complex Mariamalainagar Kancheepuram.
GS1 Article Numbers :
These are used for
universal, unique identification of products (within EDI document exchange) and with
barcoded products Within EDI messages, they
would appear as key to internal product codes.
These numbers are in conformance
with EANCOM ,the message subset of EDIFACT adopted by the Auto Sector and would appear
under "product code " in an
EDI document exchange. An example of the same is as below :
