Editor's  Note

It gives me great pleasure to present the third issue of our e-newsletter titled The RFID Source, related to help you keep abreast with the latest happenings across the world on RFID focusing on emerging Electronic Product Code (EPC) standards and the potential applications & benefits they bring to businesses.

While information on RFID is available in abundance through the Internet, it takes a lot of time & effort to search, sort and gather what is pertinent and of interest to business.

Through this fortnightly newsletter, we sift through the maze of information and present crisp, concise developments, especially related to EPC/RFID standards.

EPCglobal India was launched as a division of EAN India last year and is a member organization of EPCglobal Inc, which is driving development, adoption & implementation of EPC (Electronic Product Code) based on RFID standards and the EPCglobal network.

The earlier issues have been dedicated to use of RFID in Food & Retail sector.

This issue is dedicated to the applications of RFID in the Transport and Logistics sector. Transport and Logistics is one Industry sector which can benefit very significantly through early adoption of RFID technology in its supply chain processes. Because of the global nature of today's economy, ports, cargo containers carry approximately 90% of the world's trade. Detailed inspection of every container is simply impossible. That's where RFID comes into play.

Freight forwarders, Shipping lines, Ports, Airport Authorities, courier agencies, Customs, Cargo handling agencies, multi-modal logistics providers, third party logistics providers, Container handling depots, Railways etc. can get complete consignment/container visibility and traceability through deployment of EPC based RFID technology. This includes consignments in transit, in warehousing operations and at depots etc.

We would welcome any comments/suggestions which will make this newsletter more useful to you in its future editions. Please write to us at sangeeta@gs1india.org for the same.

We look forward to hearing from you on this issue.

Sincerely,

Ravi Mathur
