GS1 Global Office, a leader in facilitating efficient
international business, welcomes the newly adopted United
Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) Standard
for Bovine Carcasses and Cuts. The bovine specific standard
is part of the UN/ECE Standards for Meat Carcasses and
Cuts, which recommend the use of the GS1 •UCC system
to enhance communication between meat buyers and sellers.
These
new standards define and describe commercial quality
and merchandising requirements. This practical and proven approach to facilitating
international trade will provide a common trading language
for the meat industry. The standards are supported by
the GS1 •UCC system, which is used by 1,000,000 companies
in over 141 countries. It will enable companies to identify,
bar code, and efficiently trade meat carcasses and cuts
using the new UN/ECE standards.
The
UN/ECE Bovine Carcasses and Cuts Standard also recommends
the EANUCC system for tracking and tracing beef products
between the farm and retail outlets by refering to GS1 Global Office “Traceability of Beef“ guidelines in the
provisions for origin and production history.
All
major meat trading countries and regions have endorsed
the UN/ECE standard.Governments and trade organisations
from Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bolivia, Brasil,
Canada, China, European Community, Finland, France,
Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, New
Zealand, Poland, Paraguay, Russian Federation, Slovakia,
Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and
Uruguay participated in the drafting of the standard.
GS1 Global Office played an active role by contributing
expertise in developing and managing data structures,
bar codes and supply chain management standards, such
as EANCOM EDI messages. The full text of the standard
will be available soon on the Internet at: www.unece.org/trade/agr
Since
1997, GS1 Global Office and GS1 subscriber Organisations
have been working together with meat supply chain representatives
from over 30 countries in developing standards for the
identification, communication and traceability of beef
products.
A
third updated edition of “Traceability of Beef – Application
of GS1 •UCC Standards in Implementing Regulation (EC)
