Albert Heijn a
major Dutch retailer and a few other manufacturers and distributors realized the need for
having a standardized form of product codification and they set-up the European Article
Numbering in 1977. EAN was officially registered with Albert Heijn as its Chairman and
started operations with founding subscribers Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France,
Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The EAN system almost immediately
expanded beyond Europe and Japan adopted the EAN system in 1978.
