5. Visibility on Smart Consumer Mobile App
Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Govt of India, launched the Smart Consumer mobile app to enable consumers to use their mobile phones to access information about products, which is required to be provided by manufacturers/brand owners/importers under Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011.
The app enables consumers to digitally access marking/labelling information of a product, using their mobile phones through a scan of the GS1 barcode on the product. This becomes especially important when labelling information on a consumer pack is difficult to read due to its small font size. Consumers can also use the app to verify the company/product information given on the label and to connect directly with brands.
By using GS1 barcodes on their products and by uploading its information on GS1 India’s DataKart from where the company/product information in digital form is drawn, manufacturers/ suppliers can ensure accurate information is shared with consumers.
