GS1 allocates the prefix which enables your trading partners
throughout the world to identify you and your country of GS1 subscribership. In India this number begins with 890.
The next four or five digits (
depending on the prefix allocated)are allocated by the subscriber for each product and its
variant.
The last digit is the check digit
calculated from the preceding digits. The decoding software calculates what the check
digit should be while decoding the symbol and compares it to the scanned check digit. Any
difference indicates an error.
