  • Retail & online marketplaces adopt GS1 DataKart Online marketplaces and large retailers including Walmart, Reliance Retail and Big Basket said they are adopting global standards provider GS1 India’s DataKart– for standardised validation and authentication of information on retail products. “Adoption of the standards technology ensures companies' compliance on statutory labelling and guidelines, filtering out unauthorised products, license and certificate validation by consumers, quicker product listing, and alerts on depleted stocks and product recall,” said GS1 chief executive Ravi Mathur.   • Non-FASTag users may soon have to pay double toll fee if they enter FasTag lanes One may soon have to shell out twice the toll fee on entering the FASTag lane without the FASTag device installed in the vehicle. The device, when installed in the vehicle, enables payments without stopping the car at the toll plaza. The government is mulling imposition of a double toll fee, if non-FASTag vehicles enter the FASTag lane, a move that is expected to ensure seamless movement of vehicles in the lane and also give a boost to FASTag adoption.   • Barcoding raw materials used in drugs to become mandatory The Union health ministry will make it mandatory for all active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) packages to be barcoded to detect spurious drugs and monitor imported and indigenously produced raw materials used to manufacture medicines. APIs are critical components that make drug formulations potent against disease. There are about 2,500 APIs that are used to create hundreds of thousands of drug formulations. Article 22 April 2019
  • Next Time You Buy a Product, Scan The GS1 Standard Barcode on Your Phone to Know Everything About it You walk into a store to buy something. The product labels have some details, such the manufacturing date, the expiry date (if it’s a consumable) and perhaps a batch number along with the price. Next to it is a barcode, which we never really bother with, do we? Now you should, because the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) standards mean these barcodes hold more information about the product you hold up, than you could have ever imagined. GS1, a non-profit organization that develops these standards for implementation globally, is focusing on India now. GS1 India is pushing for the adoption and implementation of these standards for products sold in India, which could have a big impact on the retail sector in the country. GS1 India is is a body set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, industry bodies including FICCI, ASSOCHAM, CII as well as FIEO, IMC, APEDA, Spices Board, IIP and BIS to to push for the use of global GS1 standards across retail and supply chains.   • NPCI claims 25pc of toll collected on highways is powered by its programme The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) claimed its national electronic toll collection (NETC) programme now accounts for 25 percent of the value of the toll collected on national and state highways across the country. In a statement, the retail payments organisation which also operates payment platforms like UPI (Unified Payments Interface) and IMPS (Immediate Payment Service), said the current NETC programme processes 8.62 lakh transactions daily across 496 national and state toll plazas.
