GS1-8 or GTIN-8 (Global Trade Item Number) barcode is provided to companies for use on products that do not have sufficient packaging space to print a GTIN-13 barcode. It has only 8 digits and is a unique string of three essential components. The structure comprises a country code, a product code and a check digit. Its smaller size makes it suitable for use on products like cosmetics, chocolates, battery cells and more.

Who is eligible for the GS1-8 barcode?

GS1 India issues the complete 8-digit GS1-8 barcode to companies who need them, as deemed necessary. No prefix is allotted, as in the case of GTIN-13. Below listed are the prerequisites for a company to obtain a GS1-8 barcode.

  • The applicant company should have GCP (Global Company Prefix). If not, then the company has to get registered with GS1 India and obtain its GCP.
  • It is issued to companies on a case-to-case basis, depending on the size of the product and other attributes, subject to approvals from GS1 India.

To ensure continuous usage, the applicant company must maintain its barcode subscription with GS1 India at all times. Please note that GTIN-8 is mapped with the company's GCP. If the company does not renew its barcode subscription with GS1 India, the GCP will be terminated, and so will the GS1-8/GTIN-8 barcode.
